The Farmhouse Front Porch in Summer - Farmhouse Friday #24

It’s a great place to sit in rockers, catching up with family and neighbors.  It serves as a prime viewing spot for watching both kids and fireflies.  But most of all, it’s the perfect place for making homemade ice cream!
Special thanks to David and Susan Smith of Keller, Texas for allowing us to photograph their beautiful farmhouse porch and vintage ice cream maker!
Let’s be clear.  Front porch ice cream making is done the old fashioned way---with a wonderful, old, hand-cranked ice cream bucket.  No fancy gelato machines are involved, and there is certainly no need for electricity.

One of my favorite memories of making homemade ice cream was sitting atop a towel folded over the ice-filled bucket.   I certainly didn’t mind the cool perch in heat of the summer, and I was always one of the first to know when the ice cream was almost ready---the slowed churning as the ice cream hardened was always a good signal!  What are some of your favorite ice cream making memories?

I’ve included a wonderful family recipe that has proven to be versatile over the years.  Simply add your choice of ‘mixings’ and enjoy!  One of my favorite things to add is 3 cups of pureed fresh strawberries.  Several cups of crushed up candy bars are also a nice choice.

What other ingredients do you think would be delicious?

Homemade Ice Cream:

2 cups milk

1 cup sugar

1 can sweetened condensed milk

2 cups whipping cream

1 tsp vanilla

This blend of ingredients will make a delicious batch of ice cream!

Martha Stewart offers some great tips and advice HERE for those of you that may be new to using an antique hand crank ice cream bucket.

LaurieAnna: That is a beautiful front porch. As a small girl we would have family gatherings on the lawn occasionally. Whenever we did my dad drug out the old ice cream bucket and the salt and the ice. My mom made a dreamy vanilla custard and the cranking began. It was always the highlight of summer vacation. Thanks for the memories, I haven't had any in awhile..Happy Friday..Judy

Love the front porch! I cannot wait until it cools down just to sit outside again. I've never made homemade ice cream. I do remember having it as a child - what a fabulous memory

Oh my!!!! Homemade ice cream!!! Growing up in south Mississippi homemade ice cream was a summer must. It wasn't eaten in haste but in sweet delight. Thank you for refreshing my memories!

There were a total of 27 of us cousins. We would have a family gathering once a month. In the summer, homemade ice cream was the BIG thing! We older kids would take turns cranking (and commenting on technique) while the littler kids would take turns setting on a "special" rug on top! Beautiful memories! Thanks for the reminder!

Laurie....thanks so much for this posting! We leave for camp this Friday and the kids (all 115 of them) arrive on Sunday. It is going to be a wonderful HOT week and I can't wait to share all the emotional and heeling stories with you. You are such a great friend and thanks so much for the support of such a special place!

Firstly, the front porch really looks great. All the components did jive perfectly making the area look so relaxing. Secondly, homemade ice cream just brings back good memories of summer at home. This is a great post.
