Making Plans

We’re in the planning stages of our future farmhouse kitchen and taking our sweet time.  As I’ve shared before, although our farmhouse was built in 1894, the current kitchen was built about 15 years ago when the house was converted to a bed and breakfast.

Given its purpose, the space has just the bare necessities.  Do you see that sliver of a counter top next to the sink in the photo above?   That 2' section in the corner is all the counter space for the entire kitchen.... all of the counterspace.

There is very little cabinetry, no dishwasher or garbage disposal, no microwave, it's a bare necessities kitchen that was built for a bed and breakfast.  It is cute, we just need so much more.

Given these things and the fact that it is not the original kitchen, we’ve decided to just gut the entire thing and start over.  A notion we wouldn't have entertained had it been original, I'm thankful for the freedom this has provided in design.
Now, a new kitchen may be on the horizon for the Farmhouse on Main®, but my goal is for it to look appropriate for the age of the home and to look as if it has evolved over time.

I’ve been seeking lots of inspiration over the past few months and keeping notes of many things I would like to see in our future farmhouse kitchen.   Inspiration from Pinterest, blogs, and movies.
All of the photos in this post are from the kitchen in the movie "Practical Magic".  I am mesmerized by the details of this kitchen, and although we in no way have the space or budget to recreate anything this magnificent, some of the details will likely make their way into the kitchen at the Farmhouse on Main®
My pursuit for farmhouse kitchen inspiration is still on…..now I’m seeking it from you.
Tell me, what things would you like to see in a “new” vintage inspired farmhouse kitchen if you were tackling this project?

Do you have any inspirational movie kitchens to share?

My kitchen was redone almost 8 or so years ago..a lifetime by kitchen standards...there are things I would do again, things I wouldn't.
Great cabinetry where cabinets are warranted....
more plugs....
in your kitchen I think beadboard a must...
and excellent quality farmhouse sink...we got talked out of one...
pull-outs in cabinets...
Most important...details! Moldings, finish carpentry...even on a rustic style....details...
I think your kitchen will be awesome! and I can't wait to watch it unfold...take pix of every detail!
Hugs,
Nancy

When I think of a farmhouse kitchen I think of...beadboard, hardwood floors, built-in's, glass cabinet doors, no cabinet doors, a large sink (not sure what they are called) with a fabric curtain below, everything white! You must be having a lot of fun planning your new kitchen! Kim

You could always search "farmhouse kitchens" on Pinterest, if you haven't done that yet! Lots of great ideas! Kim

I agree with the other comments too...my kitchen is that style and we have wood floors, cabinets with legs, a large center island that was custom built to look like a piece of furniture, a farmhouse sink and a fridge and dishwasher that are covered with panels that make them look like part of the cabinets. I love my kitchen and love the warm, homey feeling it has. I think you have excellent taste and anything you choose will be "right" because it's right for you! Can't wait to see the outcome!

LaurieAnna: I live in an old house with an old house kitchen. When we bought the Cottage it had one cupboard for dishes, two drawers, stove, frig and a brick chimney. And, of course, the kitchen sink. My dad made all our cupboards, patterned after a hutch we have. He is gone now and they are very special to us. But, I didn't like to cook then so I really didn't plan it for productivity. I love to cook now so will be doing some updating. Hopefully soon. I still think the stainless steel applicances look great in an older home. You can't go wrong mixing the eras that way. Everything functional should be modern and then have the older touches..Anxious to see what you come up with. I know it will be beautiful..Judy

Oh I love the "Practical Magic" kitchen - it is my dream kitchen. I have a Victoria magazine about the house. Did you know that it was built just for the movie and torn down afterwards. I wish I'd been there with a U-Haul to take that kitchen away. I bought the movie just to look at the kitchen. Good luck with yours and enjoy all the planning and doing!

Oh, definitely a big farmhouse kitchen and some open cupboards. What fun you are going to have.

I don't know how a B&B could have survived with that kitchen. Glad it didn't because the house would not have gone up for sale and you wouldn't have your home. Dark and dreary, now this will be a transformation to see.

L.A.,
When it comes to farmhouse style kitchens you picked my all time top choice. I don't think there is another movie kitchen that can top that one...except Meg Ryan's in "Sleepless in Seattle". 'Course that one was kinda dinky.
I think it's "serendipity" that there is not a lot in that kitchen. Somebody (and we know who) knew you would want to change it and put your personal fingerprints all over it. He just saved you some time!

Deb

Check out our kitchen re-do. Soapstone counter tops. Painted white cabinets (to match the antique hutch - our inspiration piece). Painted wooden floor - black and white checkerboard on the diagonal. White subway tile. Latches and door pulls - again, matching the hutch. Ours is not a big kitchen, but we surely enjoy it!
And sunny yellow walls.
